Thinking Outside the Box - A Creative Thinking Guide
Creativity is the ability to come up with new ideas. Creative people may come up with new concepts that will help solve a problem, or they may focus on creating art that will help the world see things differently. Creative people tend to be problem solvers, because they continue to look for a new solution after the traditional ones have been tried. Many of the most creative people have gone down in history because they explored new ideas and invented things as a result of their creativity.
In early Greek culture, art was not considered creative, but rather it was restrictive, since you were only able to imitate the things you could see. The exception to this was the written language, especially poetry. As art developed over the centuries, so did the concept of creativity until the Renaissance, which began to encourage creativity in artists. Creativity has expanded beyond art into the everyday world as people look to new solutions to solve their problems. Creativity has brought about the inventions that have changed the world we live in today.
Convergent thinking is the ability to use your resources to come up with a set way to solve a problem. Convergent thinking is tested on standardized tests when there is only one solution for a problem. Divergent thinking is the ability to come up with several different solutions to the same problem using a wide variety of resources. Educators have begun to incorporate open-ended questions to encourage divergent thinking, which encourages creativity. For example, a divergent thinker would look at the resources available to help him solve a specific task. The answer he comes up with may be a new approach that would save time or it may simplify an already set process.
Creative cognition is the theory that creativity comes in two phases. The first phase is procreativity, where the person comes up with ideas that are “preinventive structures.” The second phase uses these structures to come up with the actual ideas. That phase is called the exploratory phase.
Conceptual blending is the idea that the subconscious combines the ideas and elements from different situations to help you come up with solutions to the current problems that you may be facing. It is based on the creative cognition theory, but takes it a step further in explaining how people come up with new ideas and thought processes. This theory can help explain the creative process, but it does not necessarily explain where the ideas originate. It also combines several of the other theories of creativity.
The Explicit-Implicit Interaction theory explains how both explicit knowledge and implicit knowledge work together in the creativity process. This theory pulls together several other theories regarding creativity. It focuses on the basis that each step of the creative process draws on both types of knowledge helping people come up with creative solutions to problems. Helie and Sun proposed the theory.
The Honing theory of creativity looks at the creative process differently. It considers the fact that the creator may be trying to better understand the world around him, which leads him to change things. The theory focuses on the worldview (how a person looks at the world around him) and how it changes during the creative process. This creative theory is different from the other ones because it looks at the world in relation to the changes in creative thought.
People use creativity every day. One common way is daydreaming or using your imagination to come up with a different ending to a book. It is also used when people are thinking about what might have happened if things had turned out differently. It is important to acknowledge that everyone has some creativity and that most people use it on a daily basis.
Creativity has led people to explore new ideas and come up with solutions to problems. Creativity is behind many of the technological advances that have happened over the last century. Schools are trying to encourage more creativity in thought by changing the way they teach. You can also work on your own creativity through brainteasers and logic puzzles.
There are many resources available to help you understand and explore your own creativity. You can learn how to expand and improve your creativity as well as the theories behind creativity.
